Emotional Senior Night for Men's Soccer team

The last Men’s Soccer game of the season came to a close Saturday night as the Barry University Buccaneers scored in the 70th minute to break the 2-2 tie to win.

The Mocs scored in the first half when sophomore Luke Bromley sent a long pass to senior Jonathan Radvogin who passed it to freshman Jacob Ling-Vannerus who was inside the box. Ling-Vannerus then put in a full throttle shot into the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Within the next 11 minutes Barry tied the game and the score stayed 1-1 throughout the first half.

Barry then regained the lead 30 seconds into the second half when a shot was made from the top of the 18-yard box making it 2-1.

FSC then came back to tie the game in the 66th minute when sophomore Daniel Moore scored his first goal of the season. Sophomore Callum Carsley had a corner kick and shot it towards junior Edward Spansk giving Moore a chance to score in the right wing.

Less than four minutes later Barry sealed the Mocs’ fate as they took the lead. The final shots came from Radvogin in the 77th minute but were blocked. Freshman Rene Rivera and senior Alek Cosio-Altamirano both had shots within four minutes of each other that were both deflected. Ling-Vannerus took the last shot in the 89th minute.

The Moccasins out-shot the Buccaneers 16-11 and had a 4-3 lead in corner kicks. This win over the Mocs gave Barry the final spot in the SSC Tournament.

“Even though we didn’t win the game, it was a night to remember. All the support and appreciation made it a very special night for us seniors,” Radvogin said.

Florida Southern has doubled their scoring for last season from 14 goals to 28 in the same amount of games. The amount of goals scored against the Mocs has also gone down for the fourth year in a row.

Sophomore midfielder Joseph Ammer missed the last four games of the season, still finished as the team leader with 15 points. Ammer, Radvogin and freshman Florian Thumm all shared the team lead of five goals this season.

“It was a very surreal experience having the final game of my career. Soccer has been my life since I was four-years-old and it has taken me many places and has introduced me to many amazing people. I will never forget this experience,” senior Mike Cortright said.

Among the six seniors who were honored prior to the game were Radvogin, Cortright, Cosio-Altamirano, Hassirou Diakite, Cole Clingerman and Nico Guevara. Guevara unfortunately did not play in this season due to injury.

“It was a pleasure and a honor to play for the Mocs for the past two years and I want to thank everyone that gave me the opportunity to play and all the people that were around the team like the trainers, faculty, staff and the fans,” Diakite said.

Clingerman finished his career in first for starts by a goalkeeper (55) and minutes by a goalkeeper (5,043). He finished second in shutouts (11), and fourth in saves (233). His career 1.75 goals against average ranks him in third place.

The Mocs finished this season with an overall better record than the 2015 season with last season being 5-8-1 and this season 6-7-1.

“Even though things didn’t go the way we wanted we gave our best until the end. This program is growing and I have no doubt that it will keep growing and developing in the upcoming years,” Diakite said.
