ACE Hosts Harry Potter themed Moc Pride Week

This week the Association of Campus Entertainment will be hosting Moc Pride week, formerly known as Homecoming week, and this year’s theme is Harry Potter.

There will be four events that teams can attend–two of these are only open to teams that register ahead of time.

The prize this year for the winning team is a cash prize of $1,000. To earn this grand prize, teams can get participation points by going to events or they can win a game of Quidditch or the TriWizard Tournament. There will also be prizes for second and third place.

“I feel that it is a very popular theme that more students can relate to,” said Nicole Devine, Director of Mocs Night Out. “It’s also a more specific theme than last year, which makes it a little easier to plan out what exactly is going to happen.”

Welcome to the Wizarding World is the kickoff event that will be on March 21 at 5 p.m. in Honeyman Pavilion. This event will be open to the entire campus. Students will come through Platform 9 ¾ and get sorted into their house and grab some food and refreshments.

There they can also test their knowledge with an O.W.L. test and the student with the best score and time will receive two tickets to Universal’s Islands of Adventure. There will be other prizes that will be given out to those who also score well.

After partaking in the test, students can find out which wand suits them by stopping by Olivander’s Wand Shop. A limited supply of wands will be given out, but students can also make their own “moc” wands with pretzels and melted chocolate. If students want to satisfy their sweet tooth even more, they can stop by Honeydukes and get some authentic wizarding candy. Students can also make their own owl to fetch their mail, and try to make some potions.

“This year I moved the dates around to try and accommodate to more students,” Devine said. “With these new dates I also tried new times. Another really cool thing this year is that the prize money goes directly to the students and not their organization. Something else that is different is I decreased the amount of events, this way I can allocate more money into the events during the week.”

On March 22, there will be a Swish n’ Flick in the Snake Pit at 8 p.m. They will be showing “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”.

The Quidditch World Cup is on March 23 on the Intramural Field and will be from 5-7 p.m. To participate against other teams, students must have already filled out a form on MocSync in advance.

The last competition is March 23, which is the TriWizard Tournament on Mr. George’s Green from 6-8 p.m. You must register your team in advance to participate.

“I’m really excited to participate in Mocs Pride Week since this is my first year at Florida Southern and I am such a huge fan of Harry Potter,” freshman Symmone Brookie said. “I feel confident that my team will place and I can’t wait to do the Quidditch World Cup Tournament.
